Next Generation Mobile Flash
A pro review by mobi pro    12-14-08

Adobe's Flash is one of the leading platforms for multimedia on the web today – be it online streaming video on YouTube, online games and applications on Facebook or even full website interface like, let's say, Mobilhood…

However, attempts to implement Flash on mobile devices in the past few years haven't gained much popularity. Adobe's FlashLite platform isn't exactly widely used, and many cellular applications exist only to bridge the gap between mobile abilities and online Flash applications, for example EMTube.

Recently, Adobe has announced the launch of "The open screen project". Together with leading companies such as ARM, Qualcomm, Intel, Nokia, Sony Ericsson and LG, it intends to bring the Flash experience to all future smartphones and other advanced mobile devices.  Qualcomm has already launched BREW SDK, which will allow Flash technology on those devices as well.

The project's goal is to allow for a unified display of content across all platforms, creating a consistent experience regardless of the displaying device being used to convert it. Furthermore, since Adobe doesn't intend to charge any fees for implementing Flash's future players into mobile devices, manufacturers will be able to convey media-rich content at lower costs.

What does it mean for the average joe? Well, basically it means that surfing the net using your mobile will become much more like surfing from your desktop – streaming video, online games and annoying banners. But much more than that – with the support of Flash expanding to mobile phones, mobile applications can be developed by anyone. Just imagine the amount of new games!
